.......Are Soon Parted.
Several Cruise lines have been offering cruises through the Northwest Passage. Prices for such a cruise start at over$8,000 and go up to over $50,000. Crystal Cruises
Adventure Live- The Northwest Passage 2015 Cruise
Every one of the several Lines offering these cruises put in a no money back disclaimer if there is too much ice to make the passage. Hundreds of foolish people have paid and been booked on these cruises for this summer and not a one of them will get anywhere close to either end of the Northwest passage because there is way too much ice.
Even scientists scheduled to go on research ships have had to cancel their trips because all the ice breakers available are needed for rescue duty or to break ice for following cargo ships taking supplies to isolated communities or research stations in Greenland or Hudson Bay.
Arctic Global Warming Expedition Derailed By Too Much Ice
Typically if any portion of the passage would open up for transit by anything but an ice breaker it is during the month of September when the melt peaks. But this year not only is the whole passage ice covered but both the eastern and western approaches are all covered in ice. And the forecast is for lower than normal temperatures (meaning well below freezing) for the next month.
This is an image from the North Alaskan coast. Green is land and red is sea ice. Much of that ice is thick "multi-year" ice and some of it is five years old or more.
No cruising there! This year, like last year, if a person wants to see the Northwest Passage first hand they are going to have to fly over it. I don't feel sorry for any fool that believed the government propaganda and booked on one of the cruises
