Monday (May 30th) got the call. A driver going to Casa Grande, AZ (25 mi SE of Phoenix, AZ) had taken an empty trailer instead of the one loaded with new cans he was supposed to take and didn't figure out he was pulling an empty trailer until he stopped to take his break at the Flying J truck stop in Tulsa.
How a driver can't tell the trailer is empty when it's supposed to have almost 24,000 lbs of freight in it is beyond me! It is also a mystery to me how that driver got the paperwork for the load without turning in the placard that had the trailer number and load number on it which is required for the driver to turn into the desk to get dispatched.
Charlie and I were called in to team to take the loaded trailer down to Casa Grande, AZ stopping by the Flying J truck stop in Tulsa, OK to get the paperwork from the errant driver. Departed the Anderson, IN terminal at 21:50 Monday night. Route was I-70 W to St. Louis to catch I-44 W to Oklahoma City to catch I-40 W to Flagstaff, AZ to catch I-17 S to Phoenix, AZ to catch I-10 E. I took the first driving shift and got us to Tulsa. Charlie took over and got us down I- 17 to Sedona, AZ south of Flagstaff. It got us to the pharmaceutical plant in Casa Grande and dropped the loaded trailer at 04:00 western time Wednesday and hooked to an "empty" trailer. Pulled off and cleaned crushed cans and a deflated air bag out of the "empty" and put the stuff in a trash container at a rest stop. Called the broker for our back haul and then drove on into Tempe, AZ to pick up 36,500 lbs of powdered milk packaged in 50 Kilo bags.
Charlie took over and lugged that heavy load up and down the hills considerable hills (one of them he went up is 18 miles long with a 6% grade) of I-17 and into New Mexico. I took over and got us to within 150 mi of St. Louis. Charlie took over and brought us back to Anderson. Shortly after Charlie started driving I received a call from Carter Dispatch. We were informed that as soon as we got back we would continue to team and do a run up to Minneanapolis, MN with 3 stops in Wisconsin for Toyota and then bring that back to the Carter terminal in Vandalia, OH.
As soon as we got back to Anderson at 19:30 Thursday we both went home and got showers and something to eat and then met back at the terminal at 21:30. Pulled out with me driving a 22:00 with an empty trailer bound for a Minneapolis, MN. I got us to that first pick up and then Charlie took over and did the 3 stops in Wisconsin and got us down to Bloomington, IL where I took over and took the trailer to the Vandalia, OH (Dayton) terminal dropped it and bobtailed back to Anderson arriving at 04:30 Saturday morning.
So we did some truckin this week and I made two overtimes and a day of Holiday pay.
