Big changes at Carter. Lost some of the Nissan account. Two of my best driver friends that I met there are gone. One quit and he was right to look for another job they way they treated him. Also he just got married and he was looking for a route with a regular schedule. So he found one. The simple fact is that in trucking right now a driver with a good record and good health can walk off the job at one place and be in a truck at another company the next day. My friend gave Carter 2 weeks notice though. He is starting Monday at a five day a week job. 682 mi per day, Monday through Friday running from one terminal to another and back at 45 cents per mile and better health insurance. Home every evening and weekends. Not bad really. My other driver friend has serious health issues that cropped up and it's looking like it will be months before he will be fit to drive again and Carter will probably terminate him before he is healthy enough to drive again.
It is strange to drive in and see the back 3rd of the cross dock empty. Ever since I've been there, except over the worst of the recession, that area has had trailers full of parts from either GM or Nissan. Now? NOTHING!
But I'm not worried about my own job security. That is one reason why I took this salary driver job. And now I am #2 in seniority among us five guarantee salary drivers. So as long as I can perform I'm as certain that my job is secure as one can be about anything in this ever changing trucking industry. And I'm sure they are working deals to get other freight to fill in the gap. Doesn't effect me one bit except that possibly I this winter will not be so busy as the last two for us salary drivers.
Worked hard Sunday until today when I got back at 14:45 from a run that started last night and I think I may be done for the week.
